Two things decide how a football match looks at home: picture quality and uninterrupted playback. This guide covers the technical conditions behind both, and how to check your own setup.

What quality can you get

Matches are produced in Full HD at source, and selected fixtures are offered in 4K. How much of that reaches your screen depends on your line.

Run the speed test at kick-off time. A daytime result does not reflect evening congestion.

Why big fixtures behave differently

When a heavily watched match starts, a very large number of viewers connect to the same channel at once. Two practical consequences:

1. There is congestion at kick-off. Open the channel five minutes early and let the stream settle.
2. Backup channels help. Most sports channels appear in the list in FHD, HD and numbered (2, 3) versions, fed from different sources. Add the backups to your favourites before the match.

Three things that matter in your setup

Use a cable. Wi-Fi fluctuates, and the majority of freezing traces back to it. If your television sits near the router, run an ethernet cable.

Use the right player. The app suited to your device directly affects smoothness — different players for Samsung and LG than for Android boxes. Which suits which is covered device by device in our setup guides.

Raise the buffer. If your app exposes a buffer setting, set it to 3–5 seconds. The stream runs slightly behind live, but brief dips never reach the picture.

If it freezes mid-match

In order:

1. Drop the resolution one step (Full HD instead of 4K).
2. Switch to a backup version of the same channel.
3. Stop other downloads and backups on the network.
4. Power-cycle the router for 10 seconds.
