Setting Up a Film Night at Home

What makes watching a film at home enjoyable is not only the film. Picture, sound and setting together make the difference.

Picture: pick the right version

The same film can appear in the list at different qualities. Resolution matters more for films than for live television, because cinematography carries detail in dark scenes.

Sound: the most overlooked setting

Built-in television speakers rarely do a film justice. If you use a soundbar or home cinema system:

  • If audio drifts out of sync, reset the "audio delay" setting in the player.
  • Bluetooth introduces lag; connect by cable where possible.

Fixing sync problems: common problems and fixes. Switching the audio track or turning on subtitles for a foreign-language film is covered in Changing Audio Track and Subtitle Settings.

Avoiding interruptions

Freezing during a film is more disruptive than during a match, because the narrative breaks. Prevention is simple:

  1. Stop large downloads before starting.
  2. Use a cable connection if possible.
  3. If your line is marginal, drop the resolution one step.

Why the archive beats live

On a live channel you wait for the scheduled time and sit through breaks. In the on-demand archive you start when you want, pause, and resume.

The archive is updated regularly with new releases and series.

If you cannot decide what to watch

Use the filters: genre, year and country narrow a long list quickly. Adding films to favourites builds a list for later evenings: organising your channel list
