What is IPTV and How Does It Work?

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. It means television is delivered over your internet connection instead of a satellite dish or cable line.

How it differs from traditional broadcasting

Satellite broadcasting is one-way: the provider sends, your dish receives. When you change channels, your receiver simply picks a different signal from what is already arriving.

IPTV works on request. When you open a channel, your device asks the server for that channel only. Three practical consequences follow:

1. Channel count is not limited by physical capacity.
2. On-demand content (films, series archives) runs on the same infrastructure.
3. Quality depends on the state of your connection at that moment.

The third point is the one people notice. With satellite, weather decides; with IPTV, bandwidth does.

What actually happens when you press play

1. The app connects to the server with your credentials.
2. The server returns the channel list your subscription covers.
3. When you pick a channel, its stream address is handed to the app.
4. The app downloads the stream in segments and builds a buffer.
5. Playback starts once the buffer fills.

What people call "freezing" is that buffer running empty: data is arriving slower than you are watching it.

Bandwidth you need
